new installation, but random lock ups like every 8 mintues or so

Post by notetoshow »

Hi,

GhostBSD 24.07.3

just downloaded the iso (both the mate and xfce), tried to install on nvme partition alone side with windows.
I notice that in the mate iso, when I click custom/manual partition installation button, it locks up for about 40 seconds , both keyboard and mouse lost response. But it continues eventually.
Installation completed and booted into the de fast.
However within the de it locks up randomly like a few mintues a time. Both the mate edition and the xfce edition.
Some lock ups it seems its only the keyboard/mouse being dead, the system is still going on because the new update is avaialble pops up.
One time it backs to life after like more than 1 minute, other locks I waited like 3 mintues and have to press the reboot button.
I wonder what could be wrong here, could be hardware support? My hardware is many years old should be mature support anyway.
In windows 10, also archlinux, I do not have any issues for a year.

Here's some of the hardware:

Things to consider:
I did enable Ryzen's PBO auto overclock in BIOS, but it is completely fine in windows and linux.

The USB3.0 Dock hub should not be the problem, because I have a second mouse connected directly to the motherboard, when lock up happens, both mouse lost response, keyboard completely dead no cap on off.

Memory is running in XMP profile, but is in single channel mode, only in memory channel A, not memory channel B, because my ryzen cpu lost some pins in channel B so it can no longer run anything in channel B or dual channel setup. However this is fine in both windows and linux.

Is there anything I can look into to troubleshooting?

Update:

tried some troubleshooting.

Hi it turns out it is the USB driver issue. Both my USB hub and on motherboard board usb seems to have issues.
my motherboard is gigabyte B450 AORUS PRO with up to date BIOS.

Here's the USB3.0 usb drive I use disconnect and replug,
when in linux disconnect and replug in,
on board usb ports seems to lost response for me for only once,
but the on board usb port also gives me very low write speed like USB2.0 speed only 18MB/s,
while in Linux I get write speed of full which is around 100MB/s
USB HUB lost response much more often.
Since its driver hardware support issue, I'm not sure there's anything I can do.

It could be caused by the latest GhostBSD update. I believe the fix would be for the GhostBSD project team to create a new ISO.

Until a new ISO can be created, you might try updating the live environment by running 'Update Station' before installing GhostBSD.
If that doesn't help please let us know.

You could try turning off your screensaver. It could be something to do with power management. Try turning off automatic screen blanking etc. I'm just guessing.
Also look at running
dmesg -a in a terminal to see what you can find
Also run

cat /var/log/messages

There may be a clue there

This happens with a fresh install with no configuration at all?

Thanks for the tips. Let me try to have a reinstall with update first in live environment.
I was in the process of configuration the appearence of xfce due to I use 4k monitor, mainly 2x scaling, thats all.
Also did a pkg update, reboot, then am looking to get chrome installed and it keeps locking up

Hi it turns out it is the USB driver issue. Both my USB hub and on motherboard board usb seems to have issues.
my motherboard is gigabyte B450 AORUS PRO with up to date BIOS.

Here's the USB3.0 usb drive I use disconnect and replug,
when in linux disconnect and replug in,
on board usb ports seems to lost response for me for only once,
but the on board usb port also gives me very low write speed like USB2.0 speed only 18MB/s, while in Linux I get write speed of full which is around 100MB/s

a quick search shows those 3 bug reports seem to be similar or same: (but has marked as resolved or timeout in 14.1 release):
